Rohit Sharma shocked the cricketing fraternity by announcing a sudden retirement from Test cricket. The senior player was expected to continue as the captain for the England series but he decided to retire from red-ball cricket. Rohit dropped himself from the playing XI for the fifth Test against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and he didn't get a proper send-off from the red-ball cricket.
Rohit will continue to play ODI cricket and is set to lead the Men in Blue in the 2027 ODI World Cup. He retired from T20Is after leading India to a title win in the 2024 World Cup.
Social media is flooded with wishes for Rohit and his fans are lauding the India legend. Rishabh Pant quickly shared a post for Rohit and sent him a message after his Test retirement. "Your presence and impact will echo in that dressing room forever. Much love, @rohitsharma45 bhai," he wrote on Instagram.
Rishabh was part of the Test team when Rohit made his Test captaincy debut against Sri Lanka in 2022. Rishabh was also part of Rohit's final game as the Test captain. While Rishabh played the fifth Test, Rohit dropped himself for the must-win game.
Rishabh is a solid contender to be part of the leadership group going ahead. He is a regular member of the playing XI in Tests and could be appointed the vice-captain. Rishabh, who made his Test debut in 2018, has already played 43 Tests. Rohit ended his Test career with 67 caps.
Jasprit Bumrah could be named the new Test captain. The right-arm pacer joined Rohit in the leadership group in 2022 and made his captaincy debut against England in the one-off Test.
He led India in the opening Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Perth. India kicked off the series with a win. The senior pacer made his return as the captain for the fifth Test, which Rohit missed.
