India skipper Rohit Sharma declared his intention to retire from Test cricket through his social media post, on Wednesday, May 7. However, he legendary batter confirmed that he will continue to play ODI cricket for the Men in Blue side.
"Hello everyone. I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It's been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format," Rohit said in an Instagram story.

Former Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan, who had opened the innings for India across all three formats with Rohit Sharma for many years wished his ex-partner for the next innings. He told him to ace it just like he do in everything else.
"The whites are off, but life's got a new Test lined up. Go ace it like you always do," wrote Shikhar Dhawan on his Instagram story.
The 38-year-old finished his Test career with 4301 runs from 67 matches at an average of 40.57. Rohit made his Test debut against the West Indies at Eden Gardens in 2013, scoring a century in his opening innings.
Initially a middle-order batter, Rohit struggled with consistency until switching to an opener in 2019, when he found success. Rohit had a successful run with the red-ball in 2021, scoring 906 runs at an average of 47.68, but his form deteriorated in 2024, averaging just 24.76 for the year.
As per the recent reports, the senior men's cricket team selection committee was eager to name a new captain for the forthcoming Test tour of England, which begins on June 20, according to sources who spoke to India Today only hours before Rohit made his decision. Additionally, according to sources, it was unclear if Rohit would agree to travel for the five-Test series as a specialist hitter.
The selectors' position seems to have influenced Rohit is choice. For the highly anticipated tour, a new captain will be chosen, and Jasprit Bumrah, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant are all in the running. Earlier this year, during two Test matches in Australia, Bumrah had led India in Rohit's place.
