Under current NFL rules, teams can avoid being forced onto Hard Knocks if they meet any of the following criteria:
- They have a first-year head coach.
- They have appeared on Hard Knocks in the past 10 years.
- They have made the playoffs in the past two seasons.
This eliminates several notable franchises for 2025. Teams that recently hired head coaches and are therefore exempt include:

- New England Patriots
Additionally, recent participants such as the Bears (2024), Jets (2023), Lions (2022), Cowboys (2021), and others are also off the list due to their previous involvement.

Any one of these franchises could find themselves in the spotlight this summer, barring any being selected for the yet-to-be-announced Hard Knocks: In Season edition.
