Hardik Pandya, the captain of the Mumbai Indians, and Ashish Nehra, the head coach of the Gujarat Titans, have been hit with hefty fines by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for violating the IPL Code of Conduct during a thrilling match at the Wankhede Stadium.
This was the second infraction of the season for the Mumbai Indians, and Pandya was fined for his team's sluggish over rate. He was consequently given a Rs 24 lakh penalty. The impact player and concussion substitute were among the other members of the playing XI who were fined either Rs 6 lakh or 25% of their match fees, whichever was lower.
Nehra, on the other hand, received punishment for actions that were thought to be against the spirit of the game. The former India pacer was clearly animated during the rain-shortened match and had lengthy, angry conversations with the on-field umpires. Although, the IPL's official release did not elaborate on the reason for Nehra's conduct. After acknowledging a Level 1 offence under Article 2.20 of the Code, he received one demerit point and a punishment equal to 25% of his match cost.
"As it was his team's second offence of the season under the IPL's Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Pandya was fined Rs 24 lakh," IPL said in an official statement while confirming Hardik Pandya's fine.
"Ashish Nehra, Head Coach, Gujarat Titans, has been fined 25% of his match fees and has also accumulated one demerit point for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct. He admitted to the Level 1 offence under Article 2.20 - which pertains to conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game - and accepted the match referee's sanction." For Level 1 breaches, the match referee's decision is final and binding," the statement added on Nehra's conduct.
Talking about the game, the Gujarat Titans picked up a thrilling three-wicket win via the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method after overcoming two rain delays and a determined comeback from MI. They barely survived the last ball to climb to the top of the IPL points table with 16 points and a higher net run rate after chasing a revised target of 147 in 19 overs.
