Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) head coach Daniel Vettori has refuted any fitness concerns regarding the fast bowler Mohammed Shami's dismal performance in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025). With just six wickets from nine innings thus far, Shami has appeared to be a shell of his former self.
After missing the previous season due to an injury, Shami returned to the IPL and was roped in by SRH for Rs 10 crore. Many are questioning the ace speedster's fitness because he has not made an impression in the current season. Vettori, however, has dismissed any worries regarding the fast bowler's condition and stated that he is making a lot of effort to improve.
Vettori on Shami
"There are no fitness concerns from our end. He's trained and prepared as well as he can. He had high expectations coming into the tournament, especially given how well he bowled in the Champions Trophy. If you look back two seasons ago, he was the Purple Cap winner, so we know he's capable of performing well in the IPL. This season, it just hasn't come together for him. He probably hasn’t been the consistent bowler we're used to seeing, which is frustrating for him as well. But he's working exceptionally hard to get things right,” said Vettori in the pre-match press conference.
Shami won the Purple cap in 2023, which was his previous IPL season with 28 wickets from 17 innings. This was the joint third-highest tally for a bowler in a single edition. Even though he achieved the unwanted record of leaking the most runs by an Indian bowler in the history of the event, the pace spearhead seemed to have lost his spark in the current campaign.
The Indian star was thrashed for 74 runs in four overs against Punjab Kings, which is also the second-most expensive figure in the tournament’s history. As SRH gets ready to play the Delhi Capitals (DC) in their eleventh match, he will be itching to get back to his previous level of play. The team led by Pat Cummins will try to maintain their aspirations by winning the next game since they still have a remote possibility of qualifying for the playoffs if they win their remaining games.
