With just three matches left in the Indian Premier League, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have made a big move despite being eliminated from the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) playoff race. The MS Dhoni-led side are fighting hard to ensure they avoid the wooden spoon for the first time in history and have made their third mid-season as an injury replacement.
The Super Kings have gone into the player signing market and signed a wicket-keeper batter amid MS Dhoni's future being a source of debate ahead of the 2026 campaign. The five-time champions have signed Urvil Patel, who shares the record for the fastest T20I ton by an Indian cricketer with Abhishek Sharma (28 balls), as a replacement for Vansh Bedi.
Patel has replaced Vansh Bedi, who is also a wicket-keeper batter and hails from Delhi. An official statement from the IPL confirmed that Bedi suffered a ligament tear in his right ankle. Bedi was signed by CSK for Rs. 55 Lakhs at last year's mega auction.
While Bedi did not play a single game in IPL 2025, it is worth noting that the official teamsheet for CSK's last game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) showed that Bedi's name was cut off at the last minute as Deepak Hooda retained his place. Reports from the ground suggested that Bedi was spotted in pain during the warm-up and helped by the physios.

Who Is Urvil Patel?

Urvil Patel has been signed by CSK for Rs. 30 Lakhs, which was his base price at the auction last year. Just days after going unsold, Patel scored a record-breaking 28-ball century while playing for his state, Gujarat, against Tripura at the Emerald Heights International School in Indore.
The 26-year-old has played a total of 47 matches in his career, in which has 1162 runs at an average of 26.40 and a strike-rate of 170.38 with two centuries and four half-centuries. He is typically an opening batter.
Moreover, he has also played 10 first-class games and made 423 runs at an average of 26.43 with one century. The CSK star has played 22 first-class games and made 748 runs at an average of 44 with three centuries.
Patel started his career at Baroda, where he made his List A and T20 debuts in 201,8 but moved to Gujarat, where he got a chance to play red-ball cricket and established himself in the line-up.
He was signed bythe Gujarat Titans in the 2023 IPL Auction for Rs. 20 Lakhs but did not play a single game.
Patel is CSK's third injury replacement signing after Ayush Mhatre (Ruturaj Gaikwad) and Dewald Brevis (Gujanpreet Singh). Both Mhatre and Brevis were almost immediately drafted into the playing XI, and it will not be a surprise if Patel gets a chance to impress in the remaining three games of the season.
