Punjab Kings on Sunday announced the signing of all-rounder Mitchell Owen for Rs 3 crore as a replacement for Glenn Maxwell for the remainder of the IPL 2025 season. PBKS announced the signing on X, with the caption: "UPDATE: Mitchell Owen replaces Glenn Maxwell for the rest of #TATAIPL 2025 season."
Maxwell has been ruled out of IPL 2025 due to a broken finger on his right hand.
Owen, who hails from Tasmania, Australia, has scored 646 runs from 34 T20s, including two centuries. His highest score in T20s is 108. The Australian all-rounder has also picked up ten wickets in the format.
Owen rose to fame during the Big Bash League last season when he powered Hobart Hurricanes to a title triumph with a magnificent 108 off 42 balls in the final against Sydney Thunder. He went unsold in last year's mega auction but secured a deal in the Pakistan Super League, where he played for Peshawar Zalmi.
Shreyas Iyer, the captain of PBKS, had earlier said that Maxwell fractured his finger ahead of their game against Chennai Super Kings.
Marcus Stoinis later said that Maxwell's scan results "were not great."
Maxwell did not have a great tournament this season with the bat, scoring only 48 runs from six innings, including single-digit scores in each of his last four games. He had been bought for Rs 4.2 crore at the last mega auction in November. Maxwell, however, picked up four wickets.
This is the second injury-related setback for PBKS. Earlier, they had to release fast bowler Lockie Ferguson, who sustained a "serious injury" and was ruled out of the remainder of IPL 2025.
