Andre Russell smashed an unbeaten 57 off just 25 balls as Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) put on a big total of 206/4 on the board against Rajasthan Royals at the Eden Gardens on Sunday (May 4). Promoted in the batting order, Russell took his time at the start. There was no looking back for Russell once he was set at the crease.
Batting with a strike rate of 228.00, Russell smashed 6 sixes and 4 boundaries in his knock. The right-handed batsman etched his name in the record books and created history in IPL.
Russell is now the first and only overseas batsman in history to score 1000 IPL runs at the Eden Gardens. He joined KKR in 2014 and has been with them since then. KKR have always retained him before mega-auctions. Russell has breached the 1000-run mark in 41 innings.
Gautam Gambhir tops the list of batsmen with the most runs at the Eden Gardens. The former KKR captain finished his career with 1407 runs at the iconic venue. He is followed by Robin Uthappa, who scored 1159 runs.
Russell sits at the third spot. Yusuf Pathan scored 861 runs at this venue and is at the fourth spot. With 680 runs, Nitish Rana sits at the fifth spot. He started his IPL career with Mumbai Indians and is now part of Rajasthan Royals.
Must-win game for KKR
The ongoing fixture against RR is a must-win for KKR. A defeat here will all but end their campaign. The defending champions have 4 wins from 10 matches and sit at the 7th spot in the IPL 2025 points table.
RR have 3 wins from 11 matches and they are already out of the competition. The Riyan Parag-led side is at the 8th spot in the points table. Chennai Super Kings have also crashed out of the league stage of the tournament.
