MS Dhoni Nearly Fails Bat Gauge Test; Recovers Like A Pro In Classic Comeback (Source: BCCI/IPL)
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) suffered yet another defeat in IPL 2025 as they lost to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by two runs. This was CSK's ninth defeat in 11 games. CSK had the game in control for the most part in a chase of 212, but they faltered at the last moment and succumbed to another defeat.
It was a perfect platform for MS Dhoni to take the team home, as he has done so often in his career; however, that was not the case to be on Saturday. Dhoni came into bat in the 17th over when CSK needed 40 runs to win in 21 balls, but he could only score 12 runs in eight balls.
An interesting incident unfolded when Dhoni came to bat as his bat seemed to fail the gauge test. The umpires were struggling to pass the bat through the gauge so Dhoni took the matter in his own hands and got the job done. Although the bat didn't go cleanly, the umpires were happy to give Dhoni a nod.
Dhoni managed to hit a six during his stay at the crease, but CSK needed a lot more from him than an eight-ball 12.
Meanwhile, Dhoni took the blame on himself and said he should have converted a few deliveries into big shots to ease the pressure. “When I went into bat, with the kind of deliveries and the runs needed, I felt I should’ve converted a couple more shots to ease the pressure," Dhoni said in the post-match presentation, as quoted by Cricbuzz. “I take the blame. They got off to a good start, in between we pulled it back, but Romario Shepherd was brilliant. Whatever the bowlers bowled, he was able to get maximum runs," he added.
Dhoni also emphasised the need to execute yorkers better at death overs: “We need to practice more yorkers," Dhoni said. “More often than not, when the batters start to connect, you have to rely on yorkers. Also, the margin of error (yorkers provide) – so if you’re looking for a perfect yorker, if that doesn’t happen, a low full toss is the next best thing. It’s one of the most difficult balls to hit," the skipper added.
