  • Rohit has won the IPL trophy six times
Rohit Sharma hit back at critics over his lacklustre record with the bat in the Indian Premier League (IPL) over the years, following a mixed bag campaign in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL). The ex-Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper did not mince his words by mentioning his trophy-laden career in the league.
Answering a question about his batting record in the IPL and a lack of a bumper season, the 38-year-old stated that his sole him has been to win the trophy for his team rather than win the orange cap or get a big run tally on the board. The Indian skipper claimed that scoring 600, 700, or 800 does not mean anything if the team does not win the title. Rohit pointed out that when MI won the trophy, none of their players won the orange cap.
"If I'm hitting 600, 700, 800 runs and the team is not winning, there is no use of it. What will I do with 500 runs if the team doesn't go into the final and win it. It's good for me but not for the team. I didn't ever set a goal that I want to score these many runs in a season. I want to win matches for the team and I try my best. I'm not saying my 20-30 runs are going in a winning cause. I focus on how I can best contribute and it benefits the team. Whenever Mumbai Indians has won the tournament, no one from our side won the Orange Cap. There is some reason behind it," said Rohit on journalist Vimal Kumar's YouTube channel.

Did Rohit Sharma Take A Dig At Virat Kohli?

While Rohit was talking about his own record and did not mention any other team or player, his comments quickly went viral on social media and sparked a storm. Some fans claimed that Rohit was taking a subtle dig at Virat Kohli, who is the league's leading run-getter in history but has never lifted the trophy.
Apart from Sachin Tendulkar in 2010 when MI lost the final, no player from the Men in Blue and Gold has ever won the orange cap in history. Infact, Robin Uthappa (2014) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (2021) are the only two players in history to win the orange cap in the same season when their team lifted the trophy.
Rohit has never scored more than 600 runs in an IPL season and has not crossed the 500-run mark since 2013. Infact, he has scored more than 400 runs just twice in 2016. In the ongoing 2025 IPL, the MI legend has 240 runs at an average of 30.00 with a strike-rate of 156.86 with two half-centuries.
Rohit is the league's joint-most successful captain alongside MS Dhoni. He is the only player in the league's history to win the trophy six times alongside Ambati Rayudu.
