Ayush Mhatre and Shaik Rasheed set a massive all-time IPL record during the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) clash despite Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) five-wicket defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday (April 25).
After the MS Dhoni-led side decided to drop regular opener Rachin Ravindra and hand a CSK debut to Dewald Brevis, Mhatre was promoted in the batting order. After batting at number three in his maiden IPL appearance against Mumbai Indians (MI), the 17-year-old walked out to open the batting with 20-year-old Shaik Rasheed, who was playing only his third IPL match.

Mhatre and Rasheed etched their name in the history books as IPL's youngest-ever opening, being the first instance of both openers of a team being aged 20 or lower. Overall, this was the fifth occasion of a team opening with two U-21 openers.

As far as combined age is concerned, this is IPL's second-youngest pair (38 years, 131 days) behind Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal (37 years, 135 days), who opened the batting for Rajasthan Royals (RR) for the first time against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) last week.
Meanwhile, the previous two youngest CSK openers were Faf du Plessis (27 years, 266 days) and Murli Vijay (28 days, three days) in the 2012 IPL season against Mumbai Indians.
Rasheed had become CSK's youngest opener ever on his IPL debut against LSG, while Mhatre became their youngest player ever and today broke Rasheed's record to.
Mhatre is also IPL's second-youngest opener behind Suryavanshi (14 years, 23 days).
However, the opening partnership lasted just one ball as Rasheed was dismissed for a golden duck by Shami.Mhatre made a 19-ball to continue the impressive start to his IPL career after a knock of 34 in 15 balls against MI.
