Ravindra Jadeja, the Chennai Super Kings veteran, landed in the middle of an unexpected controversy at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Friday. The incident unfolded after the 37-year-old was forced to change his bat after it failed the umpire's gauge test inspection.
Jadeja walked out to bat following Sam Curran’s dismissal in the fifth over, when he was subjected to a routine inspection, but things took a surprising turn when the umpire's bat gauge test revealed that his bat did not conform to the size regulations.
As Jadeja was asked to change his bat immediately, the southpaw smacked his bat into the ground in desperation and disbelief before switching to the one that was compliant with the rules.
The ICC bat size rule and guidelines on dimensions
Face width: must not exceed 4.25 inches (10.79 cm)
Middle thickness: limited to 2.64 inches (6.7 cm)
Edge width: Not more than 1.56 inches (4 cm)
Total bat length (handle to toe): within 38 inches (96.4 cm)
BCCI's voice on the rule: “Nobody should feel that somebody’s got an undue advantage. The BCCI and IPL have always taken all initiatives in this direction so that the fairness of the game is maintained. We have used technology to the maximum to make sure that all decisions can be reviewed so that the games don’t get unfairly affected. The idea behind this initiative is to ensure that the spirit of the game is maintained,” Chairman of the IPL, Arun Dhumal to the indianexpress.com
