The barbaric terrorist attack in Pahalgam has once again increased tensions between India and Pakistan, with an effect set to be felt in the sporting world soon. While Neeraj Chopra issued a statement clarifying that Arshad Nadeem was no longer invited to next month's Neeraj Chopra Classic' event in Bengaluru, it is the cricketing world where the ramifications are set to be felt the most.
For those unversed, Independent India saw one of its darkest days in history on Tuesday (April 22) as 27 people were killed while several others were injured as a group of terrorists opened fire at tourists in the Baisaram valley of Pahalgam in the Jammu & Kashmir region.
Post the incident, tensions have risen between the neighbouring nations, with India announcing a series of diplomatic measures against Pakistan, including the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 being put into abeyance, while Pakistani nationals currently in India were asked to leave the country.
Several reports have since claimed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have written to the International Cricket Council (ICC) asking them to no longer put India and Pakistan in the same group in global events. However, a report by Cricbuzz states that a top BCCI official there is any truth to the situation. Meanwhile, BCCI vice president Rajiv Shuka has claimed that the Indian cricket governing body will continue following government advice on the issue.
Since the 2012 T20 World Cup, India and Pakistan have faced each other in the group stage (Super 8/10) stage of every men's ICC event.
The next two ICC events are set to take place in India with the country set to host the Women's T20 World Cup 2025 and co-host the Men's T20 World Cup alongside Sri Lanka.
As per an agreement between the BCCI, ICC, and PCB before the 2025 Champions Trophy, the Pakistan team will not travel to India for both events and a hybrid model will have to be followed. While the 2026 T20 World Cup already has two host nations, the status of the 2025 Women's World Cup remains in contention, with the onus on BCCI to announce a natural venue for matches of the Pakistan team.
Another tournament that will come under the cloud is the 2025 Asia Cup, scheduled to take place in September this year. India are the assigned host, but the tournament will be hosted in a neutral venue. In the past few editions, India and Pakistan have been drawn in the same group. The format of the tournament means they face each other at least twice, with a meeting in the Super 4 almost confirmed. India and Pakistan have never played each other in the final of the continental showpiece event, but the format is designed in a manner where both will play each other thrice if they make the summit clash.
Since the 26/11 Terror attacks in Mumbai, India have not travelled to Pakistan for any cricket assignment with the 2008 Asia Cup the last instanc of the Men in Blue playing cricket on Pakistani soil. This meant the 2023 Asia Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy was held in a hybrid model.
The two teams have not played any bilateral series since January 2013, and the last test match between the teams was in December 2007.
