Rajasthan Royals pacer Sandeep Sharma created an unwanted record in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as he bowled the joint-longest over in the league's history during his side’s Super Over defeat to Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday.
Sharma bowled 11 deliveries, which included four wides and a no-ball, in the final over of DC's innings. He conceded 19 runs in the over. Tristan Stubbs hit a boundary and a six to add to Sandeep's misery. Sharma went wicketless in the match, conceding 33 runs from his four overs.
The right-arm pacer started with a wide ball outside the off stump, followed by a dot ball. He then conceded three consecutive wides before he bowled a no-ball by overstepping his crease.
Stubbs then hit Sandeep for a four and a six before the batters took a couple of singles. Sharma had a chance to pick up a wicket on the final delivery, but Maheesh Theekshana failed to take the catch offered by Stubbs.
The record for the longest over in the IPL is shared by Lucknow Super Giants pacer Shardul Thakur, who earlier this season bowled 11 balls in the 13th over against Kolkata Knight Riders. Mohammed Siraj (vs MI, Bengaluru, 2023) and Tushar Deshpande (vs LSG, Chennai, 2023) also share this unwanted record.
After Delhi Capitals were asked to bat first, the franchise posted 188 for 5 in 20 overs, with Abishek Porel scoring 49 off 37 balls. KL Rahul (38), Stubbs (34), and captain Axar Patel (34) also contributed in a great way.
Rajasthan Royals tied the score as they lost four wickets to score 188 from 20 overs. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Nitish Rana scored half-centuries. RR needed nine runs in the last over, but they could collect only eight off the bowling of Starc, resulting in the super over.
In the Super Over, RR could score only 11 runs. DC chased it down in four balls to win the match.
