The omission of Sarfaraz Khan from the India squad for the England series left many by surprise. Khan, who made a stunning debut in the home series against England and smashed a brilliant century in the first Test against New Zealand, paid the price for two ordinary matches against New Zealand, where India suffered a 3-0 defeat. He was picked in the India squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, but didn't get a chance in the playing XI before being snubbed from the Test squad for the England tour.
Sarfaraz, however, has shown good form in England ahead of the series. He was picked in the India A squad to face England Lions and scored an impressive fifty in the first unofficial Test. He continued his rich form in the practice game against India and scored a brilliant 76-ball hundred.
Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra reacted to Sarfaraz's snub and said it wasn't a good move. He said if the selectors didn't have trust in his skills, then they should not have picked him in the India A squad as well. Chopra said that Sarfaraz did fail in the final two Tests against New Zealand, but it was a series where none of the batters scored runs.
"Sarfaraz Khan hasn't done anything wrong thus far. In fact, he scored 90-plus in the one match he played. He couldn't score a hundred, but he scored runs. After that, you didn't play him in the next match, and he is not part of the Test team," Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
"He hasn't failed in England, Australia and South Africa thus far, but you haven't given him a chance. It is not a good story. I can understand if you don't have confidence in his technique or playing style, that he might not be able to score runs there, then just take a call. Then don't send him with India A also," he added.
Meanwhile, Sarfaraz worked hard for the England series and shed about 10 Kgs to be prepared for the series, but he was ignored by the selectors, who backed Dhruv Jurel, and also picked Karun Nair and Sai Sudharsan in the squad.
