Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan is reportedly miffed with PCB's treatment towards him and Babar Azam following a disastrous Champions Trophy campaign where Pakistan failed to qualify for the semifinal. With an eye on the T20 World Cup 2026, PCB left out Babar and Rizwan from the T20I series against New Zealand, with Agha Salman named as captain. The move did not change the team's fate as they suffered a crushing 4-1 defeat to New Zealand. Babar and Rizwan made a comeback in ODIs, but the Men in Green were whitewashed in the three-match series.
According to a report in Telecom Asia Sport, Rizwan was unhappy with the board's treatment of leaving out the star players without any communication. The Pakistan captain is set to meet PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi to get more clarity on his T20I selection.
"Rizwan is due to meet the PCB chairman as soon as he gets an opportunity to seek clarity on his axing from the T20I side," the sources close to the Pakistan captain told Telecom Asia Sport (www.telecomasia.net).
After the 3-0 whitewash against New Zealand, Rizwan said he wasn't consulted before being dropped from the T20I series against New Zealand. "I can't say anything about T20, it's not my job, just like here (in ODIs), I do not have all the things in my hands. Neither we knew nor were we consulted (about T20I axing). It was their decision and they took that decision and we accepted that as we have done before," Rizwan had said.
The report added that Rizwan wanted more power in selection matters and threatened to resign as ODI captain if his demands were ignored.
"Rizwan will seek more power in the selection of eleven in the match, and there is a possibility that if not given full powers, then he might resign from ODI captaincy," said a PCB source.
The source further told that Rizwan argued with interim coach Aaqib Javed as he wanted five bowlers in the side for the first two ODIs against New Zealand. Javed was roped in as interim coach till the ICC Champions Trophy after the exit of Jason Gillespie, who resigned ahead of the South Africa tour. The report added that the PCB have informed Javed that a few overseas coaches are in line to replace him as head coach.
