Priyansh Arya etched his name in the history books by playing one of the greatest knocks in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL) with a knock of 103 runs in 42 balls against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur (New Chandigarh) on Tuesday (April 8).
After Shreyas Iyer won the toss and chose to bowl first, Arya gave PBKS a blitzering start with a six on the first ball of the match. This is the only fourth instance of a maximum being hit on the opening ball of an IPL match in history after Naman Ojha (off Brad Hodge in 2009), Virat Kohli off Varun Aaron in 2019, and Phil Salt off Nuwan Thushara Kolkata in 2024.
As the CSK bowlers enjoyed a field day by taking five wickets in the first eight overs, Arya single-handedly kept PBKS alive in the match. He hit a 19-ball half-century and did not stop his onslaught after the powerplay as he reached his century in just 39 balls. The 24-year-old was dismissed by Noor Ahmed after a knock of 103 runs in just 42 balls, which will go down in the history books.

Priyansh Arya Creates History

Priyansh's knock is the fastest against Chennai Super Kings and broke a long-standing record of Sanath Jayasuriya. The Delhi-based cricketer is the first player to hit a ton against the five-time champions in less than 40 balls. Jayasuriya had taken 45 balls to achieve the feat in the inaugural season in 2008. No player apart from Arya and Jayasuriya have hit a ton against CSK in less than 60 balls.

Priyansh Arya 39 Punjab Kings Mullanpur 20025
Sanath Jayasuriya 45 Mumbai Indians Mumbai 2008

Arya's knock is also the joint-fourth quickest in IPL history alongside Travis Head and the second-fastest by an Indian player after Yusuf Pathan's 37-ball ton against Mumbai Indians in 2010 at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. The left-handed batter also registered the second-quickest knock by a PBKS (formerly Kings XI Punjab) batter after David Miller's 38-ball ton against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in 2013 at Mohali. Chris Gayle's 30-ball ton in 2013 against Pune Warriors remains the quickest in IPL.
Arya is only the eighth uncapped player to score a century in the IPL and the fastest to do so.
The PBKS star reached his century in the 13th innings, which is the fifth quickest by a player in IPL history after Chris Gayle (8.5), Adam Gilchrist (9.6), David Warner (10.6), and Travis Head (11.4). It is the fastest by an Indian, breaking Virat Kohli's eight-year record. The Indian cricket legend hit a ton against PBKS in 13.3 overs during the 2016 season.
