The Pakistan cricket team suffered a humiliating 43-run defeat to New Zealand at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui, on Saturday. This loss marks Pakistan's second ODI series whitewash on New Zealand soil, the first being in 2017-2018 when the Kiwis clean swept the visitors in a five-match series.
Pakistan had already lost the 5-match T20I series 4-1, and the defeat in the third ODI sealed their fate in the 50-over format, completing a disappointing 3-0 series loss. New Zealand had already secured the series 2-0 after their 84-run victory in the second match at Seddon Park, Hamilton. Heading into the third ODI, Pakistan was simply hoping for a consolation win to restore some pride.
The match was reduced to 42 overs per side due to rain. New Zealand, batting first, set a target of 264/8, with half-centuries from opener Rhys Mariu and captain Michael Bracewell. In response, Pakistan's batting faltered, and right-arm bowler Ben Sears took a career-best 5/34 to dismiss Pakistan for 221 in 40 overs. New Zealand won by 43 runs, completing a 3-0 clean sweep. This was Sears' second career five-wicket haul in ODIs. Captain Michael Bracewell was named Man of the Match for his all-round performance, scoring 59 runs and taking 1/39 with the ball.
In other highlights, Daryl Mitchell made history as the fastest New Zealand batsman to reach 2,000 ODI runs, achieving the milestone in just 47 innings, surpassing Andrew Jones's previous record of 52 innings.
"It's a disappointing series. Positives for us is the good touch of Babar Azam and Naseem Shah's batting. Sufiyan bowled really well. I will give credit to New Zealand; they played really in all departments of the game. We need to play better against new ball. We will go back and discuss whatever we have learned from here. We are going to enjoy PSL; it's a big tournament for us. We couldn't do well in Champions trophy (and the series here) hopefully we will do well in PSL," said Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan on the defeat.
