Mumbai Indians suffered their third defeat of the IPL 2025 against Lucknow Super Giants at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. As the match reached its last over, a strange occurrence happened on the field, and it involved star India batter Tilak Varma. He walked back to the dressing room in the middle of the 19th over. However, he was not dismissed by any LSG bowler.
Tilak Varma walked back to the dressing room, as he retired himself out. This is because he was not looking at all in form at the crease, having scored 25 from 23 balls. He was not able to time the ball to perfection. Since MI needed players to connect the ball for fours and sixes, they had to take back a terribly out-of-touch Tilak Varma.
Tilak himself entered as the impact player in place of Vignesh Puthur.
Tilak Varma becomes the fourth player ever to be tactically retired out by a team in IPL history. Ravichandran Ashwin was the first player to have retired out in the IPL, when he played for Rajasthan Royals against LSG in the 2022 season. IPL 2023 saw two players being retired out namely Gujarat Titans' Sai Sudharsan and Punjab Kings' Atharva Taide.
