From Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev to Sachin Tendulkar to MS Dhoni to Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma, Indian cricket's strength has come from seamless transitions from one generation to another which has seen at least one or two players emerge as poster boys who have carried the burden of expectations of the nation.
With Virat and Rohit in the sunset of their career, many have questioned who will be the next 'poster boy.' While Rishabh Pant has already established himself as a superstar, especially in Test cricket, and Yashasvi Jaiswal has made a dream start to his international career, Jos Buttler has predicted that Shubman Gill will carry the tag.
Buttler, who is currently playing under Gill's captaincy in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL), claimed that he was impressed seeing how Gill trains and hailed his captaincy. The ex-England captain also hailed the 25-year-old's star leadership at the Gujarat Titans (GT).
"Look, Shubman is a star, isn't he? He is going to be the poster boy of Indian cricket. I think he is a fantastic player. I have really enjoyed it. I think one of the great things with the IPL is that I have played against these guys. But now I get to watch him up close and be on my team. I really like watching him practise and learning things about how he goes about it. He has led the team brilliantly. He has got a nice relationship with the whole team. And he and the coach get on well. And yeah, he has got that passion on the field which I love and also a clear, calm head. So he is doing a fantastic job as leader," said Buttler in an interaction with Cricbuzz.
Gill was named GT's captain ahead of the 2024 season after Hardik Pandya's move to the Mumbai Indians (MI). He was also the vice-captain of the Indian team in their victorious Champions Trophy (CT) 2025 campaign and is widely expected to lead India on a full-time basis in the future. The star batter made his captaincy debut for the Men in Blue ina five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe.
