Canada cricket captain Nicholas Kirton found himself in hot soup after being arrested for carrying a large quantity of banned substance, according to a report in Jamaica Gleaner. Kirton was arrested at the Grantley Adams International Airport in Barbados. Reports confirm that Kirton was carrying 20 pounds (approx. 9 kg) of cannabis, also known as ganja or marijuana. For the unversed, possession of up to two ounces (approx. 57 grams) of cannabis is not a criminal offense, but people are not allowed to carry it in public, and failure to do so can attract a heavy fine.
However, Kiron was carrying the substance almost 160 times the permissible limit, for which he was taken into police custody.
Who Is Nicholas Kirton?
Nicholas Kirton was born in Barbados and played cricket for their U-17 and U-19 sides. He was also part of the West Indies U-19 squad, however, he did not play a game for the team. Kirton's mother was from Canada which made him available to represent the side in international cricket. The destructive batter went on to play List A cricket for Canada, making his international debut against Oman in February 2018. Kirton was appointed Canada captain across formats in July last year. The southpaw has so far played 21 ODIs and 28 T20Is for Canada, scoring 514 and 627 runs, respectively, including seven fifties across formats.
Canada are set to play in the North America Cup alongside Bahamas, Bermuda, USA, and Cayman Islands from April 18, however, Kirton's arrest has put his participation in doubt.
Meanwhile, Cricket Canada released a statement on the Kirton controversy and said that the board is fully committed to ensuring transparency: "Cricket Canada has been made aware of the recent allegations and detainment involving National Team player Nicholas Kirton. We are actively monitoring the situation and closely following developments as they unfold. Cricket Canada is committed to ensuring transparency and will provide updates as more details become available.
"We take this matter seriously and remain steadfast in upholding the highest standards of integrity and accountability within the sport. While this situation is being addressed, we would like to assure the public that our National Men’s Team is fully focused on their preparations for the upcoming North America Cup, set to begin on April 18th in the Cayman Islands.
"Cricket Canada remains dedicated to supporting the team as they continue to represent our country with pride and professionalism."
