After being left stranded on 9,999 runs by India during the Sydney Test, Steve Smith completed 10,000 runs in the longest format of the game on Wednesday (January 29) at the Galle International Stadium on the first day of play in the opening match of a two-match series between Australia and Sri Lanka.
Smith is leading the side in the absence of Pat Cummins, who is absent due to personal reasons while also nursing an ankle injury. The 36-year-old completed the milestone with a quick run of Prabath Jayasuriya's bowling on the first ball of his innings.

Smith is the fourth Australian player in history to reach the milestone. Previously, former captains Allan Border, Steve Waugh, and Ricky Ponting achieved the remarkable feat. Australia have surpassed India and are the only team in history to have four players in the 10,000 Test runs club.

Smith is the fifth fastest to reach the milestone after crossing the elusive mark in just 205 innings. Only Brian Lara (195), Sachin Tendulkar (195), Kumar Sangakkara (195), and Ricky Ponting (196) reached the milestone quicker than the Australian cricket legend. Smith has crossed 10,000 Test runs in 115 matches, which is the joint second-fastest alongside Sangakkara. Only Lara (111) completed the massive feat quicker.
Overall, Smith has 10,103 runs in 115 matches (205 innings) in his Test career with 35 centuries at an incredible average of 56.44. The stand-in Australian captain is unbeaten at the crease with 104 runs to his name at stumps on Day 1 of the ongoing Test with the visitors in pole position at 330-2. Usman Khawaja also scored a century.
