Ravichandran Ashwin lashed out at Ben Stokes after the England captain and his teammates had a meltdown in the final minutes of the Manchester Test against India as the visitors pulled off a miraculous draw to keep the series alive heading into the fifth Test at the Oval from Thursday (July 30).
After India's memorable rareguard effort to deny England a win, Stokes offered a draw to India after 15 overs left, but the visiting team denied the offer. At the point Stokes tried to shake hands, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar were both batting in the 80s and nearing tons.
However, India's decision to bat on as both Jadeja and Sundar did not go well with the England players, who threw their toys out of the pram with nasty remarks towards the Indian duo.
Ashwin did not mince words and accused Stokes of double standards. The star all-rounder claimed that England wanted India to share their frustrations over not getting a victory and questioned why the Indian players should miss out on a well-deserved century.
"Double standards are these. You are frustrated. You can fight with your players, you can punch the ball. Do whatever. But by shaking hands, you are saying 'I am frustrated, you also do not make a 100. You also go crying.'How can it be like this. You are saying, 'I am unhappy. You also don't be happy. He has worked since morning. He has played Archer. Matthew Hogard, Darren Gough. Andrew Flintoff. All bowlers you bowled, he played. Should he leave a century?
'Your question was 'do you want to make a century against Harry Brook?' No. He wants to make a 100. Bring Andrew Flintoff, we did not say no. You are bowling Harry Brook. That is your mistake not ours. I want to ask Zak Crawley, what is your role?," said Ashwin on his YouTube Channel 'Ash Ki Baat.'
Ashwin further claimed that if he were in Shubman Gill's place, India would have batted the entire quota of overs. The legendary Indian cricketer also claimed that the draw was like a win for the visiting side.
"I am disappointed. They should have bowled underarm like Greg Chappell. What is the rule? This is ridiculous. If both captains believe the game does not have a result, both captains can agree to play out a draw. One captain wanted to close out why? He did not want to tire out his bowlers, and secondly, 'I am frustrated. You should also not be happy.' The second point does come in the rule. If I was captain, I would have played all 15 overs," Ashwin stated.
"You only become the brand ambassador for the spirit of cricket. You should have bowled 15 overs with Harry Brook. That would have been a great advertisement for the spirit of cricket. It would have been a better advertisement than Sunil Gavaskar and Rishabh Pant did. His statement 'You want to get a 100 against Harry Brook?' Of course, these are Test runs; he wants to get it, and he deserves it.
"And Zak Crawley, 'If you wanted a 100, you should have batted quicker.' That is his choice. When to make, when not to. You want to make quick runs and get out. That is your game. Zak Crawley or Ben Stokes, you bat in the end, would you have left your hundred for the spirit of the game? I feel like laughing. It's crazy. That's why I feel it is not a draw, it is an Indian win," Ashwin concluded.
Indian head coach and captain Shubman Gill came out in strong defence of Sundar and Jadeja by stating that both player deserved centuries after their gritty effort.
For those unversed, ICC's playing conditions allow the match to end with 15 overs left on the final day if both captains agree.
