Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar pulled off a dramatic draw in Manchester to keep the England vs India series alive. The duo batted out more than two sessions to bring India back from the brink of defeat and end the game in a stalemate on Sunday.
Having conceded a 311-run lead and lost their openers for duck in the second innings, India displayed a steely resolve to get a favourable result mainly due to the efforts of captain Shubman Gill (103 off 238), K L Rahul (90 off 230), Jadeja (107 not out off 185) and Washington (101 not out off 206).
Jadeja and Sundar's efforts were hailed widely, with former India batter Wasim Jaffer and VVS Laxman leading the tributes.
"Being in the field for 157 overs, 0/2, series on the line, incredible amount of skill, determination and character required to do what these champions have done. So much respect for fighting out a draw that feels no short of a win," Jaffer wrote on X.
"Fabulous display of resilience and character by KL, Shubman, Jaddu and Washi to secure a draw in Manchester. It’s indeed a significant achievement considering the challenging situation India faced. Good luck for the last game, Team India," added Laxman.
Considering the match situation, the dogged resistance from the two Indian left-handers in the second and final session was reminiscent of R Ashwin and Hanuma Vihari’s match-saving stand in the Sydney Test of 2021.
