India coach Gautam Gambhir hasn't delivered great results in Test cricket since taking over from Rahul Dravid, and a few of his decisions have left many baffled. India are 2-1 down in the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy, and can best draw the series if they save the fourth Test, and beat England in the fifth Test. Critics have come hard at Gambhir for his decisions, including Kuldeep Yadav and Abhimanyu Easwaran's absence from the playing XI, and called for his sacking.
However, the BCCI is unlikely to take any harsh decision as it is still early days for Gambhir. But, according to a report in the Telegraph, the board is reportedly not happy with the chairman of selectors, Ajit Agarkar, and a member of the selection committee, SS Das. The report did not mention if BCCI is planning to take any major decision against Agarkar or Das, but it does reveal that BCCI is keenly looking into reasons for India's below par performance in Test cricket.
"The coaches always talk of balance, but keeping a world-class wrist spinner like Kuldeep Yadav out has had disastrous consequences," the report quoted a source as saying.
The report also stated, "It is understood that the role of the two members of the national selection committee who are on tour with the squad, chairman Ajit Agarkar and East’s representative Shiv Sundar Das, has also come under introspection."
Gambhir took over as India coach after the T20 World Cup 2024. He led India to a win in the ICC Champions Trophy, but his record in Tests has been poor. India's only series win under Gambhir came against Bangladesh; however, India suffered defeats to New Zealand and Australia. The team also failed to win the series in England. Despite his below-par record, the BCCI will give him time before taking harsh calls.
"Gambhir's record has been disastrous in the longest format - eight losses and four wins in 13 Tests before the Manchester game. As of now, Gambhir stays, since the BCCI doesn’t want a change at the top, especially in a team which is in transition," the report added.
