Rishabh Pant suffered another injury blow during the ongoing Test series against England as he was hit on his ankle while batting against Chris Woakes in the 68th over of the first day's play at Old Trafford. The wicketkeeper-batsman tried a 'glamourous shot' against Woakes. The ball hit his right ankle after making a contact with his bat. England reviewed the decision, which turned out to be not out. But the impact of the blow was such that the batsman was even struggling to stand.
There was a swelling on his right foot. He quickly retired out after the blow and was taken off the field. It remains to be seen if Rishabh will be able to bat when he is fit. Ravindra Jadeja replaced him in the middle.
Rishabh suffered a blow to his finger in the third Test. While he was fit to bat, he only kept wickets for 35 overs in the previous game. Rishabh recovered from the finger injury before the fourth Test and was set to keep wickets. But he might not be able to do the wicketkeeping job now.
Dhruv Jurel, who kept wickets in Rishabh's absence, will once again do the job if Rishabh isn't fit. Rishabh is presently in hospital and a clear word on him should be out in the next few hours.
"Rishabh Pant was hit on his right foot while batting on Day 1 of the Manchester Test. He was taken for scans from the stadium. The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring his progress," BCCI stated in their official update.
India nearing 250
Meanwhile, India are nearing a total of 250 in their first innings. Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul provided a dominant start to India and added 94 runs for the first wicket. Yashasvi scored 58 while Rahul hit 46 off 98 balls. Shubman Gill failed to score big and departed for 12.
Rishabh was batting on 37 off 48 balls when he suffered the blow. India were 225/3 after 71 overs on day 1. They will aim to put on a score of more than 350.
