Shubman Gill's aggressive on-field style during the Lord's Test, according to former England all-rounder Moeen Ali, was similar to the style of Virat Kohli's fiery energy and might have inadvertently brought out a more fearsome version of the England team. Moeen thought Gill's strategy might have prompted England to come back stronger in the match.
"My take is, it's fine. I think he's just trying to be competitive in front of a fight and very similar to Virat, I think it's fine. But then, obviously the other team, what you've done is, I think you've actually brought out the best of England and the fight and that beast England can be," said Moeen Ali while playing in GSL.
"And I think it's a different side of England. They've shown all the players that it's great for the series to win. I don't know why it's getting criticised," he added.
With a century at Headingley and a record-breaking ton and double hundred in the second Test at Birmingham, which India won handily by 336 runs, Gill has been one of India's most impressive players in the series. But at Lord's, where he scored 16 and 6, his performance suffered, and he was also involved in verbal spats with Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley.
"He just knows what he's doing. I think he's done it for many years. I think he's been amazing with the bat this series, obviously. I think with the ball, he hasn't quite got the wickets, but he does what he does. He's very tight. He can bowl, but he's not outstanding... I think now he's at the peak of his batting. Bowling wise, I think he just doesn't have the wickets. With the tally, I think he's bowled well, he just doesn't have the wickets," Moeen said.
Gill's aggressive play, England's tenacity, and India's selection conundrums are all helping to create what is expected to be an exciting match between two evenly matched teams as the five-match series progresses.
