Former England batter David Lloyd believes that India head coach Gautam Gambhir will need to change his plans about Jasprit Bumrah for the current series against England. India recently lost the third Test at Lord's by 22 runs, putting them behind 1-2 in the five-match series. For the second time in the series, Bumrah's five-wicket haul was in vain because his five-wicket haul in the first Test at Headingley, Leeds, too ended in a losing cause.
India is now in a vulnerable situation as a result of losing both of Bumrah's games, as Gautam Gambhir disclosed prior to the tour that the fast bowler is only expected to play three games in the series. If India wins the upcoming Test in Manchester, which is scheduled for July 23, David Lloyd believes they may need to alter their plans for Bumrah moving forward in the series.
"It is what they've said and what the coach Gautam Gambhir said that he will play three out of the five Tests. So, he's got a choice. There are two matches to go. He's played two. If they are true to their words, he should play this next game at Old Trafford. But then, you know, they can manoeuvre that, can't they? If he plays this next one at Old Trafford and they get a result to make it 2-2, you'd think he'd play at The Oval as well. I'm second-guessing, but I think he'll play this next game and see where they are. If England go 3-1, he won't play. But if it's 2-2, he will play at the Oval," said Lloyd on TalkSport Cricket.
He also brought up India's record of wins and losses when Bumrah is in the playing XI, claiming that they don’t win as many when he doesn’t play..
“That's extraordinary. There was something that said when he plays they lose more than when he doesn't play, and he is like the best bowler in the world. And he is awkward and nasty with his action, but a thoroughly decent fella,” he added.
With Bumrah in the starting lineup, India has won 20 of 47 Test matches and lost 23. However, since Bumrah's 2018 debut, they have won 19 of their 27 games without him and lost five. A fast bowler's presence is crucial in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) conditions, where only two of those 19 wins have occurred.
In contrast, India has won 10 of 33 games in SENA with Bumrah in the lineup, achieving a winning percentage of 30.30, nearly doubling their previous record of 15.65% prior to the fast bowler's debut. Therefore, Bumrah's presence would be quite important if India wants to win the current series again.
