  • Suryavanshi has impressed in the IPL and for India U-19
Following a dream debut season in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Vaibhav Suryavanshi has continued to prove his prowess during the ongoing series between the Indian and England U-19 teams, which is currently taking place in England and sees the Boys in Blue play five ODIs and two Test matches.
Suryavanshi has taken the international stage by storm once again following a successful debut for the Indian U-19 team last year in both formats. The 14-year-old finished as the top-scorer of the ODI series with 355 runs to his name in five innings at an average of 71 and strike-rate of 174.01 that saw him make one century and half-century each.
In the opening Test of the series, Suryavanshi suffered a rare failure and was dismissed for just 14 runs, but made a half-century in the second innings. The youngster also showed his ability with the ball as his left-arm spin produced two wickets.
While Suryanshi's record-breaking IPL season made him a household name in India, his brilliance in England has given a chance to English fans a chance to get a glimpse of the younger. Expectedly, the 14-year-old has earned a fan following in the country and been predicted to achieve huge things while also being labelled as the best player the world has ever seen at his age.
Daniel Peacock, a cricket analyst and statistician for the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) stated that the left-hander batter is as good if not better than Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli.
“The people I’ve spoken to in the game – I think we all have the same feeling. We’ve watched and witnessed a young star in the making, something very special. I would go as far as to say he’s probably the best 14-year-old in any sport that I’ve seen live. I think the sentiment in England is that we are watching a very special young boy playing cricket – and the expectancy is Tendulkar-Kohli-level, or even beyond,” said Peacock in an interaction with Times of India.
“People are starting to make noise about him here. Cricket fans already know who he is – even if they can’t all pronounce his name. These games usually attract a few die-hards, but there’s certainly been a little extra media attention (we’ve had the likes of BBC, The Athletic, Getty, etc.), and a lot of British-Indians have come to watch Vaibhav play in the flesh for the first time,” Peacock added.
