KEY HIGHLIGHTS
- India's lower-order put up a admirable fight at Lord's
- India were reduced to 82-7
- India's last three wickets put up 88 runs and faced 301 balls
Despite India's defeat in the third Test against England at Lord's by 22 runs which led to the Shubman Gill-led side going 2-1 down in the five-match series, the likes of Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Nitish Kumar Reddy earned praise as they almost took the visiting team over the line after a top-order collapse.
Chasing a total of 193, the Indian team lost their first seven wickets in the 25th over with just 82 runs on the board. However, the Asian Giants batted till the 75th over and ensured 170 runs were on the board before Siraj's cruel dismissal ended India's hopes.
Jadeja (61* of 181) put up a 30-run stand with Nitish (13 of 53) before the partnership ended on the last ball of the first session in the 40th over. Bumrah (5 of 54) and put a partnership of 35 runs and batted 22 overs. Siraj (4 of 30) also put up a gritty effort as he stayed on the crease with the legendary all-rounder for 13.2 overs.
India Achieve Stunning World Record As Jadeja, Nitish, Bumrah, Siraj Put Up Unprecedented Effort
Overall, India's last three wickets put up 88 runs and batted 50.1 overs (301 balls), marking the first instance in Test cricket history of the eighth, ninth, and 10th wicket partnerships batting for more than 300 balls. The previous best record belonged to England, when their last three-wicket partnerships saw off 294 balls.

The 132-ball partnership by Bumrah and Jadeja is also the longest by an Indian pair for the ninth wicket or below in a Test match, breaking a record set by VVS Laxman and Ishant Sharma (130 balls) during the 2010 Mohali Test victory against Australia, which was the only instance of India winning a Test match by one wicket. It is also the longest such partnership against England in Test history. The pair faced the fifth most balls for the 9th wicket or below in the fourth innings of a Test.
England's victory of 22 runs at Lord's was also the narrowest ever win (by runs) at the iconic venue. Despite the spirited effort by the Indian lower-order, it has extended the two-time World Test Championship (WTC) finalist's horrific recent record while chasing in the longest format. Since Sachin Tendulkar's retirement in 2013, India have managed to chase a total of 150+ in the fourth innings of a Test just twice in 26 attempts.
This is also the fourth-lowest target that India have failed to chase in Test cricket and the fifth instance of them losing while chasing below 200 with four of these instances coming since 2015.
