Going into the fourth Test in Manchester, India's playing XI will be under the scanner as the Shubman Gill-led side face some big calls as they aim to level the series at the Old Trafford Cricket Stadium, with the most crucial one being around Jasprit Bumrah.
Ahead of the series, India had announced that Bumrah would play just three matches of the five games in order to manage his workload having faced frequent issues with his back. In the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Bumrah put up a record-breaking campaign but injured himself in the fifth Test, leading to a call being made to restrict him from playing all five matches in a series.
So far, Bumrah has played two of the three games, having played the first and third but missed the second. Interestingly, there was a gap of a week between the first two Tests but Bumrah still did not feature at Birmingham in order to be fit for the Lord's clash, which started just four days after the second Test ended.
Indian assistant coach Ryan Ten Doeschate has given a major insight into the issue and revealed that Bumrah is likely to play the fourth Test as India are set to ditch the alternate Test policy with the series on the line.
"We’ll make that call in Manchester. We know we’ve got him for one of the last two Tests. I think it’s pretty obvious the series is on the line now in Manchester, so there will be a leaning towards playing him," said Ten Doeschate in an interaction with the media.
The Indian team are currently training at the Kent County Ground in Beckenham, where they also were based before the series started and played an intra-squad game.
While there is gap of eight days before the Manchester Test begins on July 23, there will be a turnaround of just three days before the final Test at the Oval starting July 31. Hence, if Bumrah plays in Manchester, it will, unless for a drastic change of plans by India, rule him out for the 5th Test.
The call skipper Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir comes down to the gamble of playing him in the fourth game and playing the fifth without him, or hoping for a win without him at Old Trafford, and using his services in the series decider.
