KL Rahul has already scored two centuries on the ongoing England tour, taking his tally to four in England. He is now on par with Dilip Vengsarkar and Sachin Tendulkar, trailing only Rahul Dravid, who has scored six hundreds in England. After playing for years under the shadow of Virat Kohli, Rahul has finally emerged as one of India's batting mainstays. His hundreds at Leeds and Lord's emphasised his ability to face the new ball effectively. Rahul scored 137 in Leeds and 100 at Lord's.
Heaping praise on the batter, former England cricketer Owais Shah said Rahul now has a great chance to cement his place in the team and become one of the prominent pillars of the Indian side in Test cricket, even positioning himself as the most vital cog in the batting line-up ahead of captain Shubman Gill, who is the highest run-getter in the series with 607 runs. Rishabh Pant is second in line, amassing 425 runs. Rahul, on the other hand, has scored 375 runs at an average of 62.50.
"I think he's been in the shadow of Kohli. With Kohli at the crease, he was always going to be your main batsman and Rahul was under the radar. But this is his time to flourish. This is the first series without Virat Kohli. Look at the batting order, yes Shubman Gill has done really well, I wasn't expecting it. I did not think he had it in him to do what he's done so far," Shah remarked on the Beard Before Wicket podcast.
He also shed light on Rahul's strengths—his technically sound batting skills and mental fortitude—and said the batter is now ready to realise his potential.
"I still feel KL Rahul is the best batsman in the batting line-up who you should be able to rely on. And it is time for him to deliver the sort of numbers his technique and temperament promise. I feel KL, over 10-15 matches, may just outscore Shubman Gill. I think we will see him really come about in the next 12 months," Shah continued.
The hundred at Lord's in India's first innings helped Rahul etch his name on the famous Honours Board of Lord's, making him only the second Indian—after Dilip Vengsarkar—to be listed more than once on the Lord’s Honours Board.
