Australia pacer Scott Boland claimed a hat-trick against West Indies on the third day of the Jamaica Test at Sabina Park, skittling out the hosts for 27 - the lowest total recorded in Test cricket since 1955. In a match that lasted just three days, Boland scripted history by becoming the first bowler to take a hat-trick in a Day/Night Pink Ball Test. Boland, who had picked up three wickets in West Indies' first innings, claimed the hat-trick by conceding just two runs in two overs.
He dismissed Justin Greaves for 11 runs on the first ball of the 14th over of West Indies’ second innings, then removed Shamar Joseph for a golden duck on the next delivery. The star fast bowler was trapped in front of the stumps by Boland. On the third ball, Boland pierced through Jomel Warrican’s defence and disturbed the stumps to complete a rare Test hat-trick.
With Mitchell Starc ripping through the West Indies batting order - claiming 6 wickets for 9 runs - the hosts’ chase of 203 runs eventually folded for 27 in 14.3 overs. It was the second-lowest total in Test cricket since New Zealand scored 26 against England in Auckland in 1955. West Indies lost the Test series 3-0, with the third Test ending in a 176-run defeat.
Boland, meanwhile, became the 10th Australian bowler to take a hat-trick in Test cricket and the sixth bowler - after Jasprit Bumrah, Naseem Shah, Keshav Maharaj, Gus Atkinson, and Noman Ali - to take a hat-trick in the World Test Championship cycle.
