England captain Ben Stokes reminded Jofra Archer (left) of Sourav Ganguly's 2002 shirtless celebration at Lord's before Day of the third Test on July 14, 2025.
Jofra Archer was playing for England for the first time in four years. His last Test came against India in Ahmedabad in 2021. On his comeback trail, he dazzled by picking up two important wickets in the morning session on the fifth day of the Lord's Test, as he removed Rishabh Pant and Washington Sundar to put India on the back foot in their chase. Archer eventually ended the innings with three wickets, including his previous day's scalp of Yashasvi Jaiswal. He finished the match with five wickets overall, including his exploits in India’s first innings. With England captain Ben Stokes taking three wickets, India eventually fell short of the target by 22 runs while chasing 192 in the second innings.
After the game, Stokes recalled a funny incident that fired up the pacer. The England captain spoke about watching an old highlight of former India captain Sourav Ganguly waving his shirt after his team chased down 325 at Lord's in 2002 with two wickets in hand.
"I just said to him (Archer) this morning, 'You know what today is?' Oh yeah. There was that highlight package from when India knocked off like 300-odd back in the day, when (Sourav), he thought that was the World Cup final as well. He thought that was six years today. Genuine," revealed the skipper.
Stokes' comments drew huge laughter from the media persons, after which he went on to reveal how he corrected his 'confused' teammate. "I was like, no. That World Cup that we won. He was, 'Oh, that one.' Absolute beauty, that boy," said the captain.
July 14 marked six years since England's 2019 World Cup victory, when they triumphed over New Zealand in the Super Over in the final.
While Stokes and Archer shared six wickets between them, Chris Woakes picked up two wickets, while Brydon Carse and Shoaib Bashir scalped one wicket each to ruin India's chances of winning as the visitors were bowled out for 170. The 4th Test is set to begin on July 23 at Old Trafford Cricket Ground in Manchester.
