Since India captain Shubman Gill took on Zak Crawley for his time-delaying tactics - which denied India an over from the Nursery End near the end of the third day - tensions around the third Test at Lord's have refused to die down. On Day 4, when India came out to chase England's second-innings total of 192, the hosts’ captain Ben Stokes tried to get under the skin of KL Rahul, the centurion from the first innings, giving him a slow and sarcastic clap in the final session of the day.
On Saturday, Crawley did it - and now England deemed that India resorted to a similar tactic when Akash Deep received strapping on his right leg with only a couple of overs left in the day. England players looked frustrated with the delay and feared their momentum would be broken after they had removed three Indian batters. Back then, Gill had shouted angrily at Crawley for time-wasting and sarcastically applauded him.
Tempers are likely to flare on the fifth day as well, with the match poised for a thrilling finish. India need 135 runs with six wickets in hand. They will resume their chase on Day 5 at 58 for 4. Nightwatchman Akash Deep was dismissed by Stokes.
Earlier in the day, India bowled out England for 192, with Washington Sundar picking up four wickets, while Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj claimed two wickets each. Sundar pierced through the England middle order by claiming the wickets of Joe Root, Ben Stokes and Jamie Smith.
