Mohammed Siraj was punished by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The India pacer was fined 15 per cent of his match fee for his 'unacceptable' on-field behaviour. Siraj gave a fiery send-off to England opener Ben Duckett on the fourth day of the third Test at Lord's. Siraj breached the level 1 of the ICC the ICC Code of Conduct during England’s second innings. He has also been handed one demerit point.
Siraj went too close to Duckett while giving him a send-off on Day 4 at Lord's, resulting in his punishment. It was Siraj's second offence in two years, taking his demerit points to two in 24 months. Siraj was handed his first demerit point during India’s second Test against Australia in Adelaide on December 7.
On Sunday, Siraj dismissed opener Duckett for 12 in the sixth over of England's second innings. While celebrating the dismissal, Siraj went too close to Duckett, which the ICC deemed a breach of playing protocol.
“Siraj admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, so there was no need for a formal hearing,” the ICC stated in a statement.
Both on-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, along with third umpire Ahsan Raza and fourth umpire Graham Lloyd, lodged a complaint against Siraj for the animated celebration.
“Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee and one or two demerit points,” the statement added. Siraj is currently the highest wicket-taker in the series with 13 scalps in six innings. In the second Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham, he picked up 6 wickets for 70 runs in England's first innings. In the Lord's Test, he scalped four wickets.
