Luis Enrique's reaction after Paris Saint-Germain's 3-0 thrashing at the hands of Chelsea in the final of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup on Sunday (July 13) at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey as the Spanish coach was seen at the heart of a brawl.
Enrique was seen grabbing João Pedro by the throat and later slapping him just seconds after the full-time whistle blew. PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was in the heat of action too. It is not known what triggered the reaction from Enrique, who visibly lost his cool
Post the incident, Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca was seen having a long chat with Donnarumma, but Enrique left the scene.
Talking about the match, PSG's hopes of securing a historic fifth title in the season did not come to fruition after a dream which saw them win the Champions League for the first time as well as Ligue 1 and both domestic cups.
The European Champions, who were thrashing teams for fun, including a 4-0 victory over Real Madrid, were outclassed by the Blues as Chelsea stunned the odds to produce a magical performance.
Cole Palmer was the star of the show as Chelsea took a 3-0 lead in the first half. Palmer scored the first two goals in the 22nd and 30th minutes of the game. The Englishman later turned creator and set up Pedro. The Brazilian scored his third goal in just his second start for the two-time European Champions.
Pedro only signed for Chelsea in the first week of July, and the club played the group stage and round of 16 without him. He made his debut for the bench in the quarter-final against Palmeiras before being handed a start in the semi-final, where he scored a brace against Fluminense.
As far as Enrique is concerned, a review by FIFA is expected as he faces the threat of a long suspension if he is found at fault.
In the post-match press conference, the two-time Champions League winner managed to defend himself by stating his actions were to protect his players.
"I was trying to stop my players from fighting. It was an avoidable situation, I'm sure. There were a lot of pushes.Like I said, I was trying to stop my players. There was a lot of tension, and there was a lot of pushing. It was an avoidable situation, logically. I have nothing else to say.I saw Maresca receiving pushes and pushing people too! Clearly our intention was to stop the players," said Enrique.
