Novak Djokovic will face his biggest test at Wimbledon when he takes on World No.1 Jannik Sinner for a place in the final. Sinner and Djokovic are the only two players who have made it to the semifinals of all three Grand Slams this year. The players met just a few weeks ago at the French Open, where Sinner defeated the Serb in straight sets.
Sinner has dominated Djokovic like no other, outplaying him physically and mentally. He has won the last five matches against Djokovic, including the Six Kings Slam in Riyadh. Djokovic, however, has had success against Sinner at Wimbledon, with two of his four wins against Sinner coming at Wimbledon.
Sinner has been ruthless in Wimbledon, and barring a scare against Grigor Dimitrov, where he trailed 2-0, he hasn't dropped a set. Djokovic, on the other hand, hasn't been at his best, losing a set to Alex de Minaur and Flavio Cobolli in the last two games, but has done well to emerge victorious. However, the Serb hasn't played anyone near the quality of Sinner so far.
Sinner was heartbroken after the defeat to Carlos Alcaraz at the French Open, where he failed to convert multiple match points as Alcaraz scripted a memorable comeback. The Italian is yet to prove his credentials outside hard courts, and he would leave no stone unturned to break the jinx at Wimbledon. He has been a terrific performer at Grand Slams, and this marks his fourth consecutive semifinal at Slams, starting from the 2024 US Open. He is the youngest player since Rafael Nadal in 2009 to achieve this feat.
Meanwhile, Djokovic reaching yet another Grand Slam semifinal and beating opponents younger than him is a remarkable achievement, but that's not a tall ask for a player of Novak's calibre. The challenge for the Serb starts in the business end of the tournament when he comes up against Alcaraz or Sinner.
However, Wimbledon is one tournament where he feels very comfortable. Even Novak mentioned that Wimbledon presents him with the best opportunity to add a Grand Slam to his tally. He has made it to the semifinal of the event 14 times, surpassing Roger Federer's record of 13 semifinal appearances.
The seven-time Wimbledon champion hasn't lost a semifinal at Wimbledon since the defeat to Roger Federer in 2012, and has only two defeats in nearly a decade, both to Carlos Alcaraz in 2023 and 2024.
Sinner holds an edge over Djokovic, but if there is one Grand Slam where the odds even out, it's probably Wimbledon, where experience of the conditions plays a huge role.
Given the Serb's experience, and Sinner's unproven credentials on grass, this looks a 50-50 battle, probably slightly in favour of the Serb. Dimitrov also showed that Sinner is not unbeatable for anyone apart from Alcaraz.
