Aryna Sabalenka missed another opportunity to win a Grand Slam after she lost to Amanda Anisimova 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in the Wimbledon semifinal. Sabalenka has come close to winning a Grand Slam this year, reaching the final of the Australian Open and French Open, but suffered defeats to Madison Keys and Coco Gauff, respectively. Wimbledon was a good opportunity to end her drought, but she was outplayed by Amanda.
Meanwhile, Sabalenka was upset at Amanda for two separate acts, and didn't shy away from venting out her frustration. The first incident occurred in the second set when Amanda hit a backhand winner and celebrated even before the ball bounced twice in Sabalenka's court. This is against the law, and Sabalenka complained about it to the match referee, but he did not take any action against Amanda. He spoke to Amanda during the changeover, but she instead argued that Sabalenka should not complain because she grunts loudly throughout the match, leaving World No.1 irked.
The second incident unfolded in the final set when Amanda went 5-2 up after a shot hit the net and disrupted Sabakenka's next shot. Usually, players apologise to the opponents for their unintentional mistake, but Amanda celebrated it, again leaving Sabalanka upset. After the players walked to the chair, Sabalanka asked Amanda why she did not apologise for it.
Sabalanka reacted to Amanda's celebrations and said she was more upset at Amanda complaining about his grunting. The Belarusian said that Amanda's acts helped her make a comeback in the match as she got really angry. Sabalenka did manage to break Amanda and brought the final set to 4-5, before losing the serve and the match.
“I was just trying to chase the ball. She was already celebrating it. I was like ‘I mean, that’s a bit too early.’ She kind of pi**ed me off like saying ‘That’s what she does all the time.’ But I was grateful and thankful that she said that because I was like, it actually helped me to keep fighting. I was like ok, now I’m gonna show you the tennis. I came back because I got really angry in that moment. Probably in the 3rd set I should’ve remembered and probably it would’ve helped. But it is what it is," she said.
