South Africa all-rounder Wiaan Mulder revealed the conversation he had with West Indies legend Brian Lara after his magnificent innings of 367* against Zimbabwe. Mulder shattered records en route to the mammoth score and became the first South African to score a 350 in Test cricket. Mulder had a great opportunity to go after Lara's world record of 400 runs, but he declared the innings. Mulder said that legends like Lara should keep the record, and he would do the same if he found himself in a similar situation. Mulder's move stirred a debate, with many questioning his decision.
Mulder shed light on the conversation with Lara and said the veteran told him that he should have gone for the record. Mulder said Lara urged him to break the record if he got another opportunity.
“Now that things have settled a little bit, I’ve chatted a little bit to Brian Lara…He said to me I’m creating my own legacy and I should have gone for it. He said records are there to be broken and he wishes if I’m ever in that position again, I actually go and score more than what he had,” Mulder told SuperSport.
“That was an interesting point of view from his side, but I still believe I did the right thing and respecting the game is the most important part for me,” Mulder added.
Earlier, Chris Gayle had expressed reservations against Mulder for declaring the innings, saying that he panicked and made a wrong decision.
“I think it was an error from his side, not to try and go to get it. We don’t know if he would go on and get it or not. But he declared on 367, and he said what he had to say. But listen, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get 400 runs in a Test match. Come on, youngster, you’ve blown it big time," Gayle told talkSport
