KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • India are yet to win a toss in the series
  • Shubman Gill has lost the toss in all 3 games as captain so far
  • Ben Stokes chose to bat after bowling in the first two games
Shubman Gill's wait to win a toss as India's Test captain continued as the coin once again fell in Ben Stokes' favour during the third test between India and England at the Lord's Cricket Ground on Thursday (July 10), with the series on a knife-edge level at 1-1.
So far in the series, England have won the toss on all three occasions. The Lord's Test was the first time that Stokes chose to bat in the series after choosing to bowl in the victory at Headingley and the defeat at Edgbaston.
For those unversed, Gill was appointed India's Test captain before this tour and has now lost the toss in each of his first three games in the longest format.

India Set Unwanted World Record

As a result, India has now lost the toss in each of their last 13 games in international cricket. The streak started in January when Suryakumar Yadav lost the toss in the last two T20Is of India's five-match series against England at home in Pune and Mumbai, respectively.
Later, Indian ODI captain Rohit Sharma did not win a single toss in each of the 8 ODIs India played in February and March. Jos Buttler won the toss in each of the three ODIs of a three-match series between the two countries at Nagpur, Cuttack and Ahmedabad.
Later, Rohit lost the toss in all five games of India's victorious Champions Trophy campaign in Dubai.
India now holds the longest streak of consecutive losses in international cricket and the first team to play 13 games in a row without the coin falling in their favour.
Most Tosses Lost In A Row In International Cricket (All Formats)
Tosses Lost Team Time Period
13 India 31st Jan 2025 - Current
12 West Indies 2nd Feb 1999-21st April 1999

However, it is worth noting that India have won 11 of the 12 games in this streak (before Lord's Test) with the sole defeat coming in the Headingley Test, which was the opening game of the ongoing series.
Currently, India have lost 15 tosses in a row (12 under Rohit Sharma, 3 under KL Rahul) which is the most by any team with the previous record belonging to Netherlands (11 between 2011-2013). The last time India won a toss in an ODI game was on 19th November 2023 during the final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia.
Rohit's streak of losing 12 tosses in a row in ODI cricket is the joint-most alongside Brian Lara.
