India and England are locking horns in the 3rd Test of the five-match series at the Lord's Cricket Ground. England won the toss and opted to bat first at the iconic venue. India legend, Sachin Tendulkar, rang the bell to mark the start of the play. Many legends are in attendance for the all-important game of the series. It's a dream for every player to play at the Lord's Cricket Ground and few Indian players are playing their first Test at this venue.
29 years ago, Sourav Ganguly made a memorable Test debut at the Lord's Cricket Ground. He did something which every cricketer dreams of and slammed a century in his debut Test. But it was only possible after Navjot Singh Sidhu returned home from England.
History at Lord's: Sidhu Walks out, Ganguly walks in
Sidhu famously walked out of India's England tour due to constant bad-mouthing by his captain, Mohammad Azharuddin. He didn't realise that the words used by the captain were common in Hyderabad and he wasn't disrespecting the batsman. Sidhu later returned to Team India and played his last Test under Azharuddin in 1999.
Sidhu's decision to come back paved the way for Sourav Ganguly's Test debut. The left-handed batsman grabbed the opportunity with both hands and slammed 131 off 309 balls. Coming out to bat after the fall of an early wicket, Ganguly held one end and rescued Team India. Rahul Dravid, the second debutant in that Test match, scored 95 off 267 balls.
Ganguly continued his form and slammed another century in the next Test match in Nottingham. He scored 136 off 268 balls. Ganguly added 255 runs for the third wicket with Sachin Tendulkar, who hit 177. Dravid missed out on a century once again and departed for 84. The Test match ended in a draw.
Ganguly cemented his spot in the years to come and became the future India captain. India achieved many accolades under his captaincy and became one of the strongest teams across formats. Sidhu had his role in all the success that Ganguly achieved in his long career. Ganguly played 113 Tests and 311 ODIs from 1992 to 2008.
