Following the Test series defeat against Australia in 2024/25, the BCCI issued a 10-point diktat, which limited the families' time on the tours. From restricting the families' time to putting a weight limit on players' luggage, the board took some bold steps to end the star culture in Team India. Under the new rules, there is only a two-week window for families to stay with the players on tours exceeding 45 days.
Former India batsman, Suresh Raina, has opposed the BCCI's diktat and said that he is against this. The former India vice-captain namedropped Virat Kohli while opposing the diktat.
"It is very important to have family on tours. BCCI has taken a big decision that family is not allowed - I'm against this. You are sending them to a tour for two months...family should be allowed. It's not that they (family) are against the players, they (also) would want us to score runs and the country to win," Raina told Ranveer Allahbadia on his YouTube channel.
"(Imagine) Virat Kohli playing, his daughter clapping - it's such a proud moment. He will set the stage on fire," he added. Raina was Virat's deputy on his T20I debut against Zimbabwe in 2010.
Two months after BCCI issued the diktat, Virat spoke about having families on tours and said: "It is very difficult to explain to people how grounding it is to just come back to your family every time you have something intense, which happens on the outside."
"I do not think people have an understanding of what value it brings to a large extent. And I feel quite disappointed about that because it is like people who have no control over what is going on are kind of brought into conversations and put out at the forefront that, 'oh, maybe they need to be kept away'," he added.
Virat announced his retirement from Test cricket in May. He had retired from the shortest format after winning the 2024 T20 World Cup and is now only active in ODIs. Rohit Sharma retired from Tests a week before Virat.
