  • Root achieved a massive milestone against India
  • Root has 10 centuries and 13 half-centuries against India
Joe Root created yet another massive milestone during the first day of play in the Third Test between England and India at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground as the star English batter ensured that the hosts made the most of Ben Stokes' decision to bat first after winning the toss.
Ross walked out to bat in the first session after England lost openers Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley in the 14th over to Nitish Kumar Reddy after a 43-run opening partnership. Root built a solid partnership with Ollie Pope and ensured the England batting unit did not collapse with the series level 1-1. The former England hit a half-century in 102 balls to set a solid foundation for the hosts.

Joe Root Creates History

Through the course of his knock, Root created history and completed 3000 runs against India. The 34-year-old is the first player in the world to achieve the milestone. Last year during England's tour of India, he had broken Ricky Ponting's record for the most runs by a player against India.
Most Runs Against India In Test Cricket
Player Runs 100s 50s
Joe Root 3001 10 13
Ricky Ponting 2555 8 12
Alastair Cook 2431 7 9
Steve Smith 2356 11 5
Clive Lloyd 2344 7 12
Overall, Root is the 9th player to score more than 3000 runs against a single opponent in Test cricket and the first player from any country to reach the milestone against non-England or Australia opposition. The right-hander batter is the third Englishman to achieve the feat after Jacks Hobbs and Dawid Gowar (both against Australia).
Root registered his 13th half-century (23rd 50+ score) against India, which is also the highest by any player against India. He has 10 centuries against India, which is the second-most, only behind Australian star Steve Smith (11).
Moreover, this knock is Root's 103rd 50+ score in Test cricket, which is the joint-most alongside Jacques Kallis and Pnting. Only Sachin Tendulkar (119) is above the English star in the elite.
Root also crossed 4000 runs against India across all formats and is the fourth player after Ponting, Kumar Sangakkara, and Mahela Jayawardene to achieve the feat.
