India wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant walked off the field after a ball from India pacer Jasprit Bumrah smashed on the fingertips of his left hand while he was trying to collect it down the leg-side. His left hand was already heavily taped and needed some attention in the first session of play at Lord's before the incident that made it worse. Dhruv Jurel came in as a substitute for Pant and has currently taken over the wicket-keeping duties for India.
While we are still awaiting an official update from the Indian team, reports suggest that he has been taken off the field as a precautionary measure for the physio to assess the situation and then take a call. Latest from the Indian dressing room suggests that he is currently icing his index finger, and there is no major cause for concern. From an Indian perspective, we can only hope that it is not serious and Pant will soon return to the field.
What Happens If Pant Doesn't Take Any Further Part in the 3rd Test At Lord's?
In case Pant is not fit enough to take any further part in the Test match, India will not be allowed to include a like-for-like replacement or a substitute in place of him. The MCC laws allow replacements for concussions only since 2019. However, India would be allowed to field a replacement player who "shall not bowl or act as captain but may act as wicket-keeper only with the consent of the umpires". This means that the laws don't allow a full substitute of the injured player in Test matches.
Earlier, England won the toss and elected to field on a wicket that looks to be a good one to bat on at Lord's. Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Deep, and Mohammed Siraj kept things tight, but it was Nitish Kumar Reddy who gave India two breakthroughs in the first session of play. Both the England openers, Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, were dismissed by Reddy in the same over before Joe Root and Ollie Pope came together for the third wicket.
