A week after a jury found former NBA player Ben McLemore guilty of raping a woman at a 2021 party at a former teammate's house, a judge in Oregon sentenced him to more than eight years in prison on Wednesday.
According to Portland TV station KGW, Clackamas County Circuit Court Judge Michael Wetzel sentenced the former Portland Trailblazer to 100 months in jail. The 32-year-old was convicted by the jury last week on one count of sexual abuse, unlawful sexual penetration, and rape. On a second count of sexual abuse, he was found not guilty.
The accusations, which concerned a 21-year-old woman, were related to a party held at the residence of Robert Covington, a teammate at the time, in the Portland suburb of Lake Oswego.
Prosecutors in Clackamas County described the sexual encounter as rape during the trial. It was consensual sex, according to the defence.
According to KGW, the woman testified that she was unable to provide her consent because she was intoxicated. McLemore admitted to drinking as well, although he stated in his testimony that it was voluntary.
The Sacramento Kings selected McLemore, who attended Kansas for college, seventh overall in the 2013 NBA Draft. Before his final NBA season with Portland in 2021–2022, he had played for Memphis, Houston, and the Los Angeles Lakers. He has since performed professionally throughout China, Turkey, and Europe.
