Pickleball's power couple Parris Todd and Hunter Johnson have chosen different paths in their lives. The strain in their relationship was laid bare at the Select Medical Orange County Cup when Todd was noticeably absent from Johnson's bench. Johnson went on to win the men's singles gold at the PPA Tour event. Todd confirmed the breakup on the PICKLEBALLERS podcast. Todd and Johnson dated for a little over two years, navigating their respective climbs up the rankings as a cohesive unit. Their unwavering mutual support was incredibly meaningful.
“Everything happens for a reason, and I’ll always hold him dear to my heart,” said Todd. “We played together for a long time. We were able to win together and lose together, and you learn so much about someone going through all of that. And the fact that we can share that with each other is such a cool story. I’ll remember it forever.”
“I appreciate everything he’s done for me because he supported me from day one. I’ve never had that in a relationship. The fact that he was able to be selfless enough to always be on my bench, always helping, always coaching me, and traveling with me,” shared Todd. “We’ve had times where I was overwhelmed, and he was always there to tell me, ‘You’re going to be okay, I’m here for you.’ It was a relationship at a time that we both really needed. We were such a support system for each other that I couldn’t imagine my life with him not on the road.”
Despite their breakup, both Todd and Johnson are determined to be respectful to each other and remain supportive. “We want to stay friends and we want to maintain a good relationship because why should there be animosity or hate between us when we’ve built this beautiful relationship and friendship?” she mentioned.
Todd and Johnson were also open about their friendship with Johnson’s twin brother, Yates, and fellow pro Roscoe Bellamy.
“I’m really grateful for the time I was able to spend with Hunter, Yates, and Roscoe,” she praised. “We had our beautiful circle and friendship, and I’m forever grateful for that.”
After Johnson's gritty title-winning performance, Jimmy Miller from the King of the Court podcast said that “he was playing with something to prove.” Todd also reflected on Johnson's recent win.
“Everything is new and very fresh, so him winning in San Clemente, that was huge for him,” she said. “I’m so happy and proud of him for accomplishing that during this hard time that we’ve had.” Together, they were also a great mixed doubles pair, winning the Newport Beach Open in 2023.
