Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are set for a return to action in August with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revamping the team's schedule following the decision to postpone the scheduled tour of Bangladesh to September 2026 last week.
The Indian team were set to play three ODIs and T20Is against the neighbouring nation, but the decision to scrap the tour meant that the Men in Blue had no ODIs scheduled till October, where they will tour Australia for a series consisting of three ODIs and five T20Is.
The decision to not play against Bangladesh has also opened up a long gap in the calendar for the Indian team with no assignment scheduled from 4th August, when the ongoing tour of England ends and 2nd October, when the first Test against West Indies at home will start.
Although the 2025 Asia Cup is scheduled to take place in September, the tournament's future also remains dicey with no confirmation about the schedule or venue yet amid political tensions between India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.
Even if the tournament does take place, the Men in Blue are currently not scheduled to play anyone in August.
A report by Newswire has revealed that the BCCI are in talks with Cricket Sri Lanka to play three ODIs and as many T20Is in the month of August. The Sri Lankan board's decision to postpone the 2025 Lankan Premier League, originally scheduled to take place in July-August has cleared the way for the series.
Post the current series against Bangladesh, Sri Lanka have an away tour of Zimbabwe scheduled, which starts on August 29, leaving ample room for Team India's visit.
As far as Rohit and Virat are concerned, ODI remains the only active format they are playing as the duo retired from T20Is last year and Test cricket in May.
Team India have not played any ODI cricket since March when they won the 2025 Champions Trophy.
