Wiaan Mulder came close to breaching Brian Lara's historic record of most runs in an innings in Test cricket during the 2nd game against Zimbabwe. The stand-in South Africa captain was batting on 367 off 334 balls when lunch was taken. SA made a shocking call to declare their innings during the lunch break. Since Mulder is leading SA in the ongoing fixture, he had a role to play in it. Mulder didn't want to break Lara's record and as per him, he would do the same thing if he gets close to the 400-run mark.
"First things first, I thought we got enough and we need to bowl. And secondly, Brian Lara is a legend, let's be real. He got 401 or whatever it was against England. And for someone of that stature to keep that record is pretty special. I think if I get the chance again, I'd probably do the same thing. I know speaking to the head coach Shukri Conrad, he kind of said to me as well, like, listen, let the legends keep the really big scores," Mulder told SuperSport after the end of the second day's play.
Mulder is an all-rounder and not many expected him to come close to Lara's milestone. Not even Lara would have thought that Mulder would ever score a triple-century in Tests. But he does think that an Indian batsman is capable of scoring a quadruple century.
Speaking on the Sky Cricket YouTube channel, Michael Atherton revealed two batsmen whom Lara thinks can break his record. The former England captain spoke to Lara about it in 2024.
While many would think Shubman Gill would be Lara's choice, that's not the case. Lara thinks that Yashasvi Jaiswal and Harry Brook can break his record and score a quadruple century. Yashasvi has been one of the best batsmen for India since his Test debut.
He has a highest score of unbeaten 214 in Tests. He has scored 2018 runs in 40 innings at an average of 53.10. Brook, who has a triple-century in Tests, has scored 2619 runs in 45 innings at an average of 59.52. He has the highest score of 317.
