Jannik Sinner, who is set to face off against American Ben Shelton in the quarter-final at Wimbledon Championships on Wednesday, remains doubtful for the matchup after undergoing an MRI scan on his injured elbow. Sinner reached the quarter-final after his opponent, Grigor Dimitrov, had to pull out of the Round of 16 clash midway through the match due to a right pectoral muscle injury on Tuesday. In the same match, Sinner took a medical timeout midway through the second set due to apparent elbow discomfort. He had earlier looked uncomfortable following a fall in the opening game but seemed to regain his rhythm before Dimitrov’s injury.
After the match, Sinner said he would undergo an MRI scan to assess the extent of his injury and would take a call on his future in this year's Wimbledon. Since then, his team has offered deafening silence, raising concerns about his availability for the quarter-final clash.
Sinner did not turn up for his scheduled practice session at 4 PM on Tuesday, further fuelling rumours that the World No. 1 may pull out of Wimbledon as his elbow problem has predictably affected him.
The 23-year-old, who is chasing his maiden Wimbledon title and career's third Grand Slam, nearly lost to Dimitrov on Monday, with the Bulgarian leading 6-3, 7-5, 2-2 before being forced to withdraw with the injury. It was the fifth consecutive time that Dimitrov pulled out of a Grand Slam event due to injury. But after his injury-induced withdrawal, the focus has now shifted to Sinner, the winner of the Australian Open and US Open. Sinner had fallen awkwardly in the opening set of the match against Dimitrov and quickly indicated that he had done some damage to his elbow.
However, late Tuesday night, some positive news came from the Sinner camp. His coach confirmed he chose an indoor practice court at Wimbledon for a brief session as he awaits the results of the MRI scan. “No news on the MRI just yet,” said Sinner’s coach Darren Cahill on ESPN. “He had it earlier today and he cannot take a day off, so he wanted to touch the ball. So Simone and I just fed him a few balls out of the basket."
“It’s not a bad thing sometimes (to practise on hard court). The more you play on grass with the uneven bounces, the more your timing goes off. (Andre) Agassi used to do it all the time… We’ve done that for a couple of years, so it wasn’t out of the ordinary.”
The blockbuster quarter-final against Shelton on Wednesday was supposed to be played on Centre Court, but Wimbledon chiefs have scheduled it to take place on No. 1 Court.
